Getting Vinyl Siding Installed
1) Get educated - with inside information. |
| |
Knowledge is Power (in this case it is anyway.)
- To have any idea if you are getting a good deal or "taken to the cleaners" the first thing you must learn is - "How much does Vinyl Siding Cost?"
- There are two websites out there that will help you figure that out: Siding4u.com's Vinyl Siding Prices page has vinyl siding price ideas posted online and a ballpark vinyl siding prices calculator which compares vinyl siding to other siding products. And VinylSidingPrices.com is attempting to list location specific vinyl siding prices... you can check to see if they have any contractors listed for your area. (Vinyl Siding Prices have been kept pretty secret for a number of years until these sites started educating consumers.)
- Learn about the different Vinyl Siding Products that are out there. All vinyl siding is not created equal but the actual "material cost margins" are not anywhere near as big as some companies would have you believe. Again, Siding4u.com has some of the most detail information available today online. Visit their Vinyl Siding Products Page | Certainteed Vinyl Siding or their Royal Vinyl Siding general pages - all of those pages have paths to highly detailed pages like this one: Royal Woodland Vinyl Siding .
- You may also visit VinylSidingMFG.com's Vinyl Siding Manufacturers page for a list of companies who actually manufacture the various vinyl siding products.
- Where ever you go or whatever site you visit, the point here is to get educated about what you are buying and the options available to you. Think of it this way, a little bit of time researching will save you $1,000's ... literally.
|
2) Get multiple estimates for comparison. |
| |
We (and most other siding professionals) suggest getting at least 3-4 estimates BEFORE YOU CHOOSE a particular company.
- The more estimates the better... to a point... you don't want to make a career out of it. A point to consider: most people wouldn't just marry the first person they dated and I use this analogy because most vinyl siding products carry a LifeTime Warranty.
- This serves many purposes: it will give you a good idea what the "normal vinyl siding job" is, you won't feel pressured to sign with one guy because you have other contractors to interview and if you have more to choose from you will end up with something closer to what you actually want at the price you want to pay for it.
We suggest getting a Free, No Obligation, Vinyl Siding Estimate from The Contractors With Integrity Network™. |
3) Take "your" time. |
| |
Some salesmen will try and rush you into making a decision on the spot with all sorts of tactics. DON'T BUY INTO IT! I understand why they do this but, I don't agree with it.
- Take "YOUR" time, find someone you want to work with at the price you want to pay. All contractors, products, salesmen & installers are not created equal - take your time and pick what is right for you. |
DIY: Do-It-Yourself Vinyl Siding
| FYI - We have been working on making vinyl siding available to do-it-yourself'ers for years now. Most vinyl siding manufacturers are only interested in sales to suppliers. And most suppliers are only interested in repeat sales to contractors. We are working to rectify this OBVIOUS oversight but for now... here's our suggestions: |
1) What Vinyl Siding is available to you? |
| |
- Look in your local phone book under "siding materials" (or something similar). Call around and see who will sell to you and help you pick out some products.
- Some contractors may help you with everything except for the installation for a small fee (typically a couple hundred bucks) which is well worth some of the pitfalls they will help you avoid.
- Also Siding4u.com has numerous Vinyl Siding Product Pages for you to get a good idea what products are out there and how they are different. |
2) Get some Vinyl Siding Installation Books. |
| |
Vinyl siding installation is like exterior finish work. The installers' job is to make everybody else's work look good as with all siding installations but with vinyl there are numerous special tricks and techniques you will need to employ to make your new vinyl siding look like wood siding (which was the whole idea vinyl siding started with in the first place.) A good vinyl siding installation is one that people say, "Oh really? That's Vinyl Siding? I thought it was cedar."
- So do your homework and get some books so you don't spend hours in your yard wasting $100's of dollars of materials "trying" to figure out how to do J-Channel (ugh.)
- See How To Install Vinyl Siding books at InstallVinylSiding.com. |
3) Measure (your house) twice - cut (a check) once. |
| |
- I can't stress enough how important it is to get your measurements right the first time. You don't want to run out of materials or money. And sometimes with materials it may take a few weeks to get more shipped.
- Here's a helpful resource at Siding4u.com - How to Estimate Your Vinyl Siding Costs by Calculating Your Exterior Square Footage.
- As I've told countless installers that I have trained, "A good siding installer already finished the job in his head BEFORE he pounds the first nail." Spending a little time preparing and re-measuring makes all the difference in the world. |
